FIRST ITERATION

2024

Five painted blocks — a Big Wheel, a rum bottle, a Puerto Rican flag, a child’s face, a leather belt. The first attempt at the idea, and the first time I photographed the same set in more than one arrangement.

Nothing here is a fragment. Each block is a whole object, complete in itself, and the meaning of any one of them changes depending on what sits beside it. Move the belt to the end of the row and the row says something else. That was the discovery.

ORIGINAL PROJECT STATEMENT, JANUARY 2024

This is the crux of the new direction of the work. Impermanence, flux, and interaction. My original composition is just the seed to the work, creating the launchpad for others to participate and become a part of the project. Different perspectives, different rationale, different reflections. The work is always evolving, and is never exactly the same as the original form. Only documentation provides proof of the work as it was in any given form, because there is no one solidified form.
